As you have heard for some time now, Northern Rivers is embarking on a major transformation of its information technology environment with the implementation of Office 365.
Office 365 is a subscription to Microsoft applications and other productivity services that are enabled over the internet (cloud services), and includes Exchange Online (email), OneDrive for Business (personal files), SharePoint (shared files), Skype for Business (video conferencing), and many more features.
We are migrating (moving) the hosting and storage of email and files from our internal servers to the Microsoft cloud, which radically simplifies our environment, eliminates more than 50 outdated servers, brings all users into one active directory, provides improved reliability, and offers enhanced tools for communication across the agency and with our partners and clients. With over 60 million users, Microsoft Office 365 is a proven and reliable platform.
Best of all, Microsoft Office 365 is free for nonprofits.
We have been testing and planning for the last several months to make this process as smooth as possible with minimal impact on you, our users, and we have developed an incremental approach to include four phases:
Phase 1 active directory consolidation
Phase 2 email migration
Phase 3 OneDrive implementation (home folders)
Phase 4 SharePoint Implementation (shared folders)
We expect to complete the first three phases by the end of the year, and we will start the SharePoint implementation at the first of the year. The first phase is the active directory migration which will start next week. We currently have five domains (neparentchild.org, parsoncenter.org, etc.), and we all will be moving to a new single domain: nrfs.org.
We will be migrating groups of 50–100 users a week to the NRFS domain followed by the migration of your mailboxes several weeks later.
ACTION ITEM: You will receive an email notifying you of the migration date with instructions to login into the new domain on Office 365.
We appreciate your support on this important initiative.
